The short version: Do not clean or sort it, keep any paperwork with it, and let us look at everything together. Some pieces are worth more than their metal.
Many people who walk into a coin shop are not collectors. They are settling an estate or sorting a drawer of jewelry from a relative. A little preparation makes the visit simpler and protects the valuable pieces.
Before you come in
- Do not clean anything. Polishing a coin can wipe out most of its collector value.
- Keep paperwork with the items. Receipts, certificates, appraisals and original boxes all help.
- Leave graded coins in their holders. The sealed plastic slab is part of the value.
- Bring it all. Pieces that look like costume jewelry are sometimes real, and the reverse.
Metal value vs. collector value
Most jewelry and common bullion is worth its metal content. Older or rarer coins can be worth more than their metal because of their date, mint mark or condition. We separate the two at the counter and explain which pieces fall where.
You do not have to sell everything
It is common to keep sentimental pieces and sell the rest, or to sell in stages. We can test and talk through the whole collection first, and you decide piece by piece.
